A roaring whoosh shook the glowing corals of Barangay Pusit. "Bloop!" Pusito let out a tiny squirt of black ink as a wild current tore shiny shell roofs right off the houses. He darted behind a heavy pink sponge and peeked out at the spinning storm.
Squeak! Squeal! Big squids and little squids tumbled past the coral, spinning end-over-end like out-of-control tops. Pusito shot away from his safe hiding spot and stretched his arms as wide as they could go. Smack! He caught a tumbling neighbor's slippery tentacle and forcefully stopped their wild spin.
The heavy water pushed hard against them both. Together, the two squids bravely reached out. Pop! Pop! Pop! Loud, squeaking suction cups locked tight as they caught another spinning neighbor, and then another. Their wobbly, floating chain swayed back and forth, slowly lifting right off the sandy sea floor.
"Everyone hold hands!" yelled Pusito. Dozens of frantic squids swam eagerly toward the sound of his voice. They quickly grabbed on, knitting their purple and pink arms together into a giant, squishy trampoline. A tumbling crab bounced right off their woven tentacles with a funny boing, landing perfectly safely inside an empty clam shell.
The loudest ocean wave of the storm finally crashed down on the village, shoving the squid-net completely flat against the reef. Pusito squeezed his eyes heavily shut. He gripped the tentacles beside him until his own little suction cups squeaked loudly. The cold ocean roared over their heads for a very long time, but their tightly woven arms never broke apart.
The roaring slowly faded into a quiet, gentle hum. Clear water returned, and bright sunlight magically glinted off the scattered shiny shells. Pusito opened his eyes and let out a loud, cheery whistle. As the giant net gracefully unknotted itself, the neighbors did not swim away—instead they fluttered peacefully side-by-side, keeping one tentacle comfortably linked.
