brave, cheerful, helpful

Teamwork beats pride

The old log dam cracks with a sharp snap. Brown water surges free, churning toward the mossy stump. Felix stamps one paw on the wood, tail bristled wide. 'I'll fix this alone!' he barks. The first stone tumbles back into the current with a heavy splash.

Felix drags a heavy rock to the gap, but it slips into the foam. He stacks more stones, kicks wet mud, yet each attempt washes away. His paws slide in the cold current, soaking his fur dark. The water climbs another inch past his back legs.

Rosie pads up the bank and asks, 'Need a hand?' Felix's ears snap flat and he snarls, 'Out of my way!' The water rises higher, hiding his belly. He glares at her, refusing to step aside despite the rising tide.

Rosie sets a flat stone at the base of the pile and holds up two branches. She shows how they bridge the wide gap. Felix's jaw works, silt gritty between his teeth. He steps aside, watching her careful movements.

Together they wedge the branches under the stones. The raging current slows to a low, steady murmur. A swollen wave slams their half-built wall, scattering rocks. Felix tumbles into the white froth, losing his grip on the slippery surface.

Rosie hauls him back onto the stump just as the second wave crests. They each grab the largest stone—one paw from each—and shove it into the gap. The water rushes over their combined effort, testing the new barrier.

The creek settles into a gentle trickle over the new wall. Sunlight reflects off the calm water lapping softly against the mossy stump. Felix sits with one paw trailing in the cool flow, watching the slow ripples spread outward.

Rosie nudges his elbow with her nose and says, 'Again?' Felix grins, picking up a round stone. He starts stacking beside her, tail wagging slowly. Together they build, sharing the work and the quiet satisfaction of the finished task.
