Tia dragged a heavy wooden stool up to the sunny kitchen counter, its legs scraping loudly against the floorboards. She firmly pushed a ceramic bowl of green apples out of the way to clear some space. Carefully, she stacked a mountain of bright red tomatoes directly next to a towering pile of white flour.
Tia thought to herself that she was making the ultimate family feast today. She brought her hands together in a loud, echoing clap. A massive white cloud of flour puffed instantly into the bright sunlight, coating her bare arms and settling onto the spotless countertops like a fresh snowfall.
She grabbed her favorite wooden rolling pin with both hands, gripping the rounded handles tightly. Taking a deep breath, she raised the heavy tool high above her head and brought it down hard. Thwack! The thick, stubborn lump of pale dough flattened instantly against the counter, sending another dusting of white powder into the air.
The pale dough was entirely too sticky to manage. It clung tight to the rolling pin, stretching into long, gooey strings as the tool lifted higher and higher. With a sudden wet slap, the sticky strands violently snapped. They flew upward, hitting the upper wooden cabinets and dangling lazily from the silver handles.
Tia let out a loud groan of sheer frustration. She reached up and peeled the messy, clinging dough off the wood, wincing as the gooey pieces snapped back against her fingers like wet rubber bands. Meanwhile, the sharp, spicy scent of freshly crushed garlic filled the air around her, making her nose twitch.
A quick shadow shifted in the hallway outside. Her little brother Leo peeked cautiously around the white doorframe to investigate the noise. He held a bright red plastic spatula gripped tightly in his fist, raising it high above his messy curls exactly like a brave knight drawing a shiny sword for battle.
"I can help conquer the pizza!" Leo yelled at the top of his lungs. He charged forward with a mighty war cry, reaching eagerly into a crinkling plastic bag. He wildly scattered yellow shredded cheese across the counter, onto the clean floor, and right across the toes of Tia’s canvas shoes.
Tia shook her head and let out a long, heavy sigh. She calmly brushed a stray shred of yellow cheddar off her floury sleeve. Instead of shouting at the knight, she slid a deep metal bowl full of chunky, dark-red tomato sauce across the smooth counter directly toward his waiting hands.
Working happily side by side, they plunged their fingers into the bright red paste. They aggressively smeared the thick sauce over the lumpy, stretched-out crust until it was entirely covered. Their slippery hands quickly lost traction on the oily metal baking pan, leaving greasy, red-stained fingerprints across the silver edges.
It was finally time for the fruit smoothie, Tia decided, firmly pressing the main button on the glass blender. The loud machine whirred frantically for a second, and then the lid shot off with a deafening POP. A magnificent geyser of dark purple blueberry juice rocketed straight upward, splattering against the kitchen ceiling.
Heavy purple droplets immediately rained down on their shocked faces. Leo burst into wild, uncontrollable giggles at the colorful mess. Tia hastily wiped a wet, sticky blob of fruit from the end of her nose. They scrambled urgently to mop up the massive purple puddles with thick paper towels just as footsteps echoed nearby.
BZZZZZ! The oven timer suddenly rang a shrill, demanding note. Mom and Dad walked into the kitchen just as Tia pulled the hot baking pan directly from the heat. The finished pizza looked exactly like a squashed, lumpy boot, heavily speckled with unevenly charred, bubbling slices of spicy pepperoni.
"Dinner is served," she whispered nervously to her parents, sliding the remarkably ugly, lopsided pie onto the center of the clean dining table. The busy room went completely quiet as Mom and Dad stared at the creation. Dad slowly picked up a rolling cutter and sliced through the thick crust.
Dad picked up the messy slice and took a giant bite. His eyes went wide as the thick crust gave a loud, satisfying crunch. "This is absolutely the best pizza I've ever had!" he cheered. Tia and Leo happily bumped their flour-covered shoulders together, grinning proudly as they dug into their chaotic feast.
