Terran skittered across the sun-warmed dandelion head, his eight legs tapping a hurry-rhythm on the yellow petals. His eyes were locked on something caught in the clover below — a flash of rainbow shimmer that didn't belong to any flower.

The shell glinted like a tiny mirror, blinding him for a second. He dropped to his belly, front legs tensed and coiled like springs. He thought: That is mine. I will have it.

Something landed on the opposite side of the shell with a soft tap. A golden spider — shimmering like dusted sunlight — mirrored his crouch on the same petal. Her legs tapped a quick rhythm, and a silvery loop of web spun from her spinnerets.

A bumblebee zoomed past, buzzing so loud the whole flower stem shivered. Both spiders froze mid-crouch, every leg locked in place, eyes wide. The bee disappeared into the clover with a guilty hum.

Terran lunged. A silk line anchored from his abdomen to a grass blade, and he shot forward. Glimmer grabbed the shell with her front legs at the same instant. Their silks snapped taut, humming like a tiny fiddle string in the wind.

Glimmer yanked hard. Terran's legs scrambled for purchase, but the silk dragged him backward across the petal. He tumbled past clover stems and bumped straight into a patch of sticky burrs, his legs sticking fast.

Their webs collided mid-air and knotted together like a messy ball of yarn. The knot tightened with a sharp twist, and both spiders were pulled upside down, wrapped in a cocoon of gold and silver silk.

Terran flailed, but every wiggle only pulled the silk tighter around his legs. Glimmer wriggled too, and her golden dust puffed into the air like tiny sparks. A single dewdrop gathered on a blade of grass above and fell.

The dewdrop landed with a loud plip right between their faces. Terran stopped. He stared at the wobbly sphere, then at Glimmer's wide eyes staring back from the other side of it. He let out a snort — a tiny, bubbly laugh.

Glimmer's shoulders shook with silent giggles, her golden dust puffing with each tremor. She nudged the beetle shell free from the web with one careful leg. It fell onto the petal between them, clean and shining.

Terran crawled closer and peered into the shell. Glimmer joined him, her golden legs settling beside his on the petal. The shell caught the afternoon light and turned it into a tiny rainbow that painted the grass around them.

They lay back on the petal, using the shell as a mirror-table above them. White clouds drifted slowly across the blue sky, their shapes reflected in the curved rainbow surface. Terran thought: Maybe not mine after all. Maybe ours.
