Sumayya Sajjād walked through the sun-dappled clearing, her basket of acorns swinging at her side. A crackling voice echoed between the ferns — bouncy notes, slightly wrong. She set the basket down and followed.
She pushed through the vines and found the wise old monkey on a mossy stump. In its hand: a banana peeled into a telephone shape. "Hello? Is anyone kind there?" the monkey called out.
Sumayya Sajjād took the banana phone and held it to her ear. A tiny voice squeaked, "Please?" She frowned and leaned in hard, demanding answers. The voice sputtered and died.
She tried again, sharper this time. The banana phone went dark. The peel curled inward, tight as a frown. The monkey's ears drooped.
Sumayya Sajjād sat very still on the forest floor. She closed her eyes and whispered, "I'm sorry. I'd like to hear you."
The banana phone glowed warm yellow. A cheerful voice beamed through: a child far away, who said, "I was lonely. Thank you for listening."
Sumayya Sajjād's cheeks flushed with delight. The monkey nodded sagely and tapped the banana phone against its knee. She handed it back and stood.
She walked back through the clearing, steps lighter now. Sunlight caught her hair as she neared the edge of the trees, where one old oak stood apart from the rest.
At the edge, she saw a shy girl playing alone beneath the oak. "Want to hear something?" Sumayya Sajjād called out, her voice bright and open.
The shy girl looked up, curious. Sumayya Sajjād walked over and sat beside her on the soft grass, leaning in close.
"I found a banana phone," Sumayya Sajjād whispered. "It helps when you really listen." She reached into her pocket and pulled out an acorn.
The shy girl reached out and took the acorn. Their fingers brushed. Somewhere in the trees, a banana phone glowed faintly — and two new friends sat together in the quiet.
