Rain whispered outside the cottage. On the floor, a strange box began to sparkle. Leo knelt beside it.
The lid creaked open. A voice offered gold coins or a small dog. One coin slipped down. Clink!
Leo reached past the coins. He chose the little dog. The dog popped out and shook dust everywhere.
“You are dusty,” Leo laughed. The little dog wagged hard. Together, they tumbled onto the rug.
Five happy years rolled by. Leo and the dog chased a hoop through the village, past gardens, wells, and bright laundry.
At night, they napped beside the warm stove. In the morning, they split the last crust of bread.
One quiet morning, the little dog did not wake. Rain tapped the window. Leo knelt beside the small bed.
Leo held the worn collar. “Thank you,” he whispered. The rain kept tapping, tap-tap-tap.
Leo opened the magical box again. Gold rose in shining mountains, filling the cottage with light.
Leo closed the lid. He pressed the collar to his cheek and kept the love they shared—more precious than every coin.
