Whiskers slumbers in a warm sunbeam on the soft couch. Paws are tucked neatly beneath a chest rising and falling in a slow, rhythmic purr. Afternoon light illuminates dust motes dancing in the quiet air.
A shadow falls across the rug. An intruder bursts through the open door with an ear-splitting hiss! Whiskers' eyes snap open, one amber iris wide with shock, claws instinctively extending into the cushion.
The intruder lets out a guttural growl that shakes the coffee table. Whiskers does not run or fight. Instead, it blinks slowly, deliberately, letting out a long, bored sigh.
With a fluid, graceful movement, Whiskers curls back into a tight loaf shape. It tucks its nose under its tail to block out the noise. The hissing continues, louder now, but Whiskers remains utterly still.
Suddenly, the world tilts and the sound of hissing dissolves into the soft hum of the refrigerator. Whiskers' head lifts slightly, ears twitching at the silence.
Realizing the terrifying intruder was only a phantom, Whiskers scans the empty living room. A single feather drifts down from an old toy mouse on the floor, landing softly near the couch.
Whiskers stretches one paw out, batting gently at the drifting feather. The sunbeam shifts across the carpet. A deep, rumbling purr starts in Whiskers' chest, vibrating against the upholstery like a small engine.
The cat settles back down, content and safe. Eyes closing slowly, Whiskers is ready for another round of sweet dreams. The living room returns to quiet peace.
