Beneath the old clock tower, Ella had vanished. Only a note remained: “Find me before the last chime.” Lucas and Ethan raced into the winding alley. Beside a loose brick, the ink began glowing blue.
Lucas dropped to his knees and pulled the brick free. Ethan leaned close to read the puzzle scratched behind it: “Where wheels sleep, count the stars.” A distant bicycle bell rang once. Then both boys dashed toward the town shed.
Inside the bicycle shed, dusty wheels hung from rafters like silver moons. Lucas searched beneath a workbench while Ethan traced the shadows. Clink! Three painted stars appeared on a wooden post, pointing back toward the tower. “That must be our trail,” Ethan whispered.
Behind the star-marked post lay three mismatched keys. At the tower door, Lucas tried the first; it stuck. Ethan tried the second; a cupboard sprang open, and rubber ducks bounced everywhere. Their laughter echoed up the stone walls.
The third key slid into a hidden lock. Click. A narrow stairwell opened inside the tower. Then the clock lurched forward with a booming clang, and the laughter stopped. High above, gears began grinding toward midnight.
Lucas climbed first, holding the lantern high. Ethan followed, counting each step beneath the ringing gears. Dust swirled around their shoes. “Together,” Lucas called. Ethan answered, “Together,” and they climbed faster as the final chime drew near.
At the highest platform, Ella stepped from behind the clock face. She seized the iron lever and pulled. The hands stopped one minute before midnight. “You found me,” she said. “The puzzle tested whether you could work together.”
The tower began ticking normally again. Ella, Lucas, and Ethan carried the glowing note down through the quiet alley. At the corner, Ella offered a fresh scrap of paper. Three pairs of feet scattered after it, racing toward the next hidden adventure.
