Luna raced across the schoolyard. Her loose shoelace caught, and down she went beside the hopscotch lines.
Clatter, clatter! Luna's lunchbox popped open, sending apple slices across the ground. She reached for it and called, “Help!”
Children hurried past with skipping ropes and bright balls. Luna gathered apple slices while swing chains squeaked behind her.
A kind girl knelt beside Luna. “I’ll help,” she said, reaching for the lunchbox.
The kind girl offered a hand. “I’ll take you to the teacher,” she said.
Luna limped beside her helper. One runaway apple rolled ahead like a tiny red ball.
At the teacher’s door, Luna sat on a chair. Her scraped knee waited beneath a cool, damp cloth.
The kind girl stayed close and made a silly bandage face. Luna laughed, and the teacher smiled.
Luna and the kind girl walked back outside holding hands. The bell rang—ding-ding!
On the bench, they shared the last apple. Then they raced toward the swings together.
