friendship and problem-solving

A shimmering beetle zipped ahead of Leo through the golden savanna grass. He chased it straight into the festival clearing—but a tree root caught his foot and he tumbled face-first into a glistening puddle. Whoops! he yelped as colorful droplets sprayed across Toby, Bunny, and Momo.

Leo scrambled up to help. Stripes swirled wildly over Bunny's fur, Toby's ears lay flat and trembling, and Momo clung frozen to a low branch above. His paws shook as he watched them struggle, the festival drums beating a worried rhythm somewhere far away. Then he remembered Grandmother's story of a reversal stone near the watering hole.

Leo dashed through the tall grass toward the watering hole, heart pounding with every stride. Beneath the shimmering water, he spotted the reversal stone pulsing with soft blue light — but a massive crocodile slept soundly right on top of it. Leo froze mid-step, ears flattening against his skull as he sized up the impossible task ahead.

Leo crept along the muddy bank, breath held tight. The crocodile's massive snout rested inches from the stone, scales gleaming in the moonlight. He spied a tall feather reed bending near the water's edge and carefully plucked it, tiptoeing closer with every slow cautious step.

With the feather reed poised, Leo leaned in as far as he dared. One trembling paw reached forward, then another, until the soft white feathers brushed the crocodile's enormous nostril. He held his breath and waited.

The crocodile's nose twitched. Once. Twice. Then — AH-CHOO! A mighty sneeze erupted, sending Leo flying backward into the soft grass. Water droplets flew everywhere and the slumbering giant stirred, blinking one enormous yellow eye open.

The crocodile shook itself free, and the reversal stone erupted in a brilliant burst of swirling light. Colors spiraled outward across the clearing like a rainbow storm, sweeping over Toby, Bunny, and Momo just as the distant festival drums rang out once more.

Stripes dissolved from Bunny's fur. Toby's ears perked up with a happy flop. Momo's tail lifted from the branch and wagged. The reversal stone's light faded, and the crocodile let out a sleepy rumble before sliding back into the water.

Leo collapsed onto the soft grass with a happy sigh, every muscle aching but a huge grin spread across his face. Toby nudged him gently with his trunk, Bunny bounced against his side, and Momo rubbed cheek against his ear. They were all themselves again.

Under a sky dusted with stars, the four friends gathered around a cluster of roasted mangoes. Leo shared his with everyone, juice sticky on his whiskers. The magical puddle behind them had gone still and clear, reflecting the night sky like a mirror.

The festival drums were finally back — a steady joyful rhythm rolling across the savanna. Leo lifted his head, ears perking, and looked toward the celebration clearing glowing with torchlight in the distance. The adventure was over, but the fun was just beginning.

The reversal stone sank gently back into the silt, its glow fading to a soft whisper. Leo blinked up at the endless starlit sky and thought — next time, he would chase the beetle much more carefully. The savanna hummed with peace as his friends rested close beside him.
