Three houses sat shoulder to shoulder on Maple Lane, each with a big grassy backyard. The sun poured warm gold over every fence and flower bed.
Bramble plopped his tiny green turtle into a metal bowl stacked with dry kibble. SNAP. A fluffy black dog stood frozen in a litter box. A calico cat yowled from a bare aquarium.
Three kids pointed at each other. Kibble tumbled across the sun-warmed grass. "Wrong bag!" someone shouted. The turtle's shell clinked against the bowl's rim.
The turtle slid slow toward the garden fence, leaving damp tracks through scattered kibble. In Bramble's cupped hands, its shell was cool and still. A thin ribbon of blue water soaked right through his sock.
"She's thirsty," he thought, and the words came out very small. Far over the hedge, a yowl drifted down like a lost thread.
Pinkies pressed together in a triangle. Three tiny paws held high over the grass. "The Great Pet Promise!" they shouted in unison.
The afternoon sun turned all three houses golden. Bramble watched the calico stretch. Poppy watered the turtle. Max brushed the black dog. Each of them nodded, hard.
By nine o'clock, three backyards glowed with soft porch light. The calico curled on Bramble's lap, purring like a tiny engine. Somewhere down the street: a muffled thump. Then quiet, even breathing.
