Mara pushed the creaky gate and walked up the garden steps. She turned the brass doorknob and stepped into the dusty hallway. "Hello?" she called, but only silence answered.
Mara climbed the staircase and tried three doors. The first two were locked, but the third opened to a sunlit room.
Inside, she lifted a box lid and found a faded photograph and a smooth wooden bird. She traced the photograph's edge, her lips pressing into a thin line, then slipped the bird into her pocket.
Mara found a toy chest in a quiet room and lifted the lid. A chipped teacup and a dented kettle sat inside.
She set them on the floor and pretended to pour tea. Suddenly, a music box began to play a familiar lullaby.
She froze, then swayed as the melody wrapped around her. When the song ended, she found a card that read, "Every song is a hug from me."
Mara pulled aside a tapestry to reveal a small door painted with stars. She opened it to a sunlit attic filled with jars.
She read one aloud: "I am in the wind that tickles your nose." She smiled and whispered, "I hear you."
Mara arranged the jars in the living room and opened one to find a chocolate-stained recipe card.
She hummed the lullaby as she mixed batter. The scent of vanilla filled the kitchen.
She left the card on the table beside the wooden bird and the sun drawing.
The house was no longer just old and dusty. It was full of songs, full of hugs.
