In the kingdom of Drakthang, the people lived quietly under the kindness of their old king.
One morning the king handed a warm bread roll to a little girl. Her mother smiled and bowed deeply.
One morning the king rang the great brass bell. Every person in Drakthang came running to the square.
"I am going," the king said. "I will give you everything I own." The people gasped. The bell kept ringing.
He carried baskets of apples to every house. He pushed open the grand castle gates. "This is your home now," he said.
Tharan lifted his golden crown and placed it gently into the little girl's hands.
The king had given it all away. He stood in the empty square with nothing but his robe. He felt very small.
Shadows fell over him. One by one, the people returned. They carried apples, bread, blankets, and flowers.
The king's eyes filled with tears. He reached out and took a warm apple from the little girl.
Then she placed the golden crown back on his head. "You are still our king," she said.
The people of Drakthang sang and shared everything together. The king smiled and listened.
And the kingdom of Drakthang learned that a king who gives everything becomes the richest of all.
