Bramble and Pip lunged for the last acorn at the same time. They tangled and tumbled onto their backs.
Pip flattened his ears and stamped his foot. The acorn rolled away, and neither spoke again.
Three days passed without a word between them. Bramble gripped a warm pebble and heard a dry rustle — but the squirrel scurried away.
Thunder cracked and rain poured across the clearing. Bramble pressed his ear to the wet ground and heard a tiny squeak.
Bramble grabbed his blue umbrella and splashed through the rain until he found the squirrel shivering under a mushroom.
As soon as the blue umbrella covered them, the squirrel launched himself into Bramble's arms and clung tight.
Bramble nudged the acorn toward the squirrel. They sat together on the moss as the rain slowed to gentle taps.
Golden sunlight broke through the trees. Both acorn halves rested between them on the soft moss.
