Eli stood at the edge of the watering hole. He kicked a dry twig with his foot.
The twig snapped with a loud crack. A small lizard scurried away into the shadows.
Eli stepped onto a slippery rock. It slid backward, making a squeaking sound.
His trunk curled tightly around his own ear. He let out a little squeak of surprise.
He stomped hard on three smooth stones. They creaked but finally held firm under his weight.
Eli reached for the cool water. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew dust into his eyes.
He sneezed loudly, spraying water everywhere. Droplets flew up like tiny diamonds.
Eli wiped his eyes with his trunk. He took a deep, steady breath.
