A trail of silver dust glowed across the library floor. Emma followed it past old shelves she had never noticed, watching the sparkling path wind between the books until it disappeared behind a row of leather-bound encyclopedias.

She pushed the shelf and it slid aside with a soft click. Behind it waited a narrow door carved with constellations, and warm golden light spilled from the crack beneath it.

Emma stepped inside and gasped. Floating lanterns drifted between shelves, and every book hummed with a soft colored glow. A blue-bound volume poked its head out like a little creature and whispered, 'New reader,' before retreating.

She opened another book and a flock of paper butterflies burst out, swirling around her head and landing on her shoulders like living confetti. When she giggled, they scattered in startled flight.

She reached out to catch one, but it dissolved into motes of light against her palm. She stood very still, hands cupped gently, listening to the pages whispering from every shelf.

A massive chestnut tome with brass clasps floated down and opened itself on a reading stand. Words rose off the page like smoke, and Emma read aloud.

The story came alive around her — a ship sailing across a sea of ink, dragons weaving through the rafters. But when she turned the page too eagerly, the room shuddered.

The story creatures froze mid-motion, all turning to stare at her. Emma closed her eyes and took a slow breath.

She whispered, reading one line at a time like a lullaby. The ship unfreezes. The dragons yawn and settle back into their scenes.

She kept reading gently, and the whole room began to glow brighter, as if the library itself was breathing easier.

Emma walked back through the hidden door just as the librarian called that it was closing time. She looked at the shelf, then at her empty hands.

On her way out, she paused by the children's section, pulled out a bright red storybook, and carried it to the reading rug where a younger boy waited.
