Finding adventure in mistakes

The school bell rang: Ding-ding! Bumblewink rolled over and pulled a leaf blanket up to the beak. “Sunday!” Bumblewink chirped.

Outside, Monday rustled everywhere. Leaves shivered, branches swayed, and busy footsteps hurried toward school while Bumblewink snored beneath the blanket.

At last, Bumblewink woke and found the schoolhouse door shut. Every other animal was already inside. Bumblewink pressed an ear to the door and whispered, “Oops.”

A trail of bright feathers curled away from the schoolhouse. Bumblewink followed it into the trees. “Where are you going?” Bumblewink wondered.

Bumblewink hopped across a mossy log and splashed through a puddle. A feather fluttered ahead, dipped low, and landed on Bumblewink’s head like a silly hat.

Bumblewink laughed—then the log rolled downhill. Rumble, tumble, splash! Bumblewink spun through leaves as the forest rushed past.

Bumblewink rolled into a hidden clearing. A spring shot water straight up like a fountain. Bumblewink reached for one sparkling drop.

Slip! Plop! Bumblewink landed beside a tiny lost school bell. Its blue ribbon was tangled in the grass. Bumblewink blinked at it.

Bumblewink lifted the bell and started back. The forest path seemed longer now, but the schoolhouse roof soon appeared between the trees.

The class ended just as Bumblewink reached the door. Bumblewink raised the bell. Ding-ding! Every animal gathered around.

Bumblewink spread wide wings and told the whole adventure: the feathers, the puddle, the rolling log, and the secret fountain. The class listened with round eyes.

On Monday morning, Bumblewink would be first at school. The bell waited by the door, ready to ring. Ding-ding!
