The winter-shelter workshop roars. Branches snap and fur bristles as a badger slams a pine splinter into the hollow log.

Bramble crouches at the far edge, spine-tips flat. Her twig-drawing hidden under her paw, she watches the group groan and shove each other in the fading light.

She straightens on her toes: 'The birch, three trees—' but her voice is a thread. The squirrel's bark swallows it whole, and she sinks back to her crouch.

Bramble hops onto the flat river-stone and raises her twig like a pointer. A badger claps his heavy paw on the stone, tilting it so she tumbles sideways.

The workshop grinds to a halt; every plan keeps snapping. Bramble walks to the center and sets her twig on the packed earth with a sharp tick.

She says it slow, low, steady: 'Stop. Look at the birch. Three oaks back.' The whole clearing follows her small pointing stick to the wide, golden-furred hollow.

A beetle riding her nose makes her sneeze AH-CHOO so loud the squirrel flinches and drops her acorn. 'She's been crouching at the edge,' the squirrel whispers.

Bramble kneels at the birch's base, pressing a fern tuft into the root-cradle while the clearing hums with small work. No one asks her to be louder.

The badger nudges her square of ferns with his snout and grunts, 'Held up.' Bramble's spine-tips rise, one by one, like little flags.

Her dirt-smudged chin unwiped, Bramble watches the shelter take shape. The winter-shelter workshop finally stops snapping, bending, and failing.
