Bram and Pip haul the heavy drop cloth aside in the garage. Dust floats in the afternoon light. Beneath it sits a red race car — cracked windshield, flat tire, covered in years of silence. They step back, hands on hips. The sun paints long shadows across the concrete. Then they march, side by side, to the tool chest.
Bram and Pip scrub the hood until their elbows ache. Pip kicks the fuel line — a thin arc of gasoline sprays onto the concrete. He sniffs, wrinkles his nose. Bram already has a wrench on a rusted bolt. He twists. Click. A hidden compartment in the fender pops open, revealing something gleaming.
They crawl beneath the dashboard, threading a new wire through the tangle. The connection sparks — POP — a puff of acrid smoke rises between them. Bram and Pip cough and wave at the air. The smoke clears slowly. Pip's eyes land on something in the corner. The spare battery.
Pip drags the spare battery over — its chains clank like bells. Bram holds the tarnished key up to the sunlight filtering through the garage door. He examines it, turning it this way and that. The key fits a lock nobody has opened in years. This one might be different.
They connect the battery cables — positive to positive, negative to ground. Their hands are steady. Bram presses the key into the ignition. They hold their breath. They turn. The starter whines. Once. Twice. Nothing. Bram turns it again, knuckles white.
The engine sputters. Coughs. Then — RUMBLE. A deep, joyful roar fills the garage. Dust shakes loose from the rafters above. Bram and Pip freeze, eyes wide, as the car vibrates beneath them. The sound is alive. The car is alive.
Bram and Pip climb into the front seats. The leather creaks. The speedometer needles jump. They look at each other and grin — wide, toothy, unstoppable. Together they push. The car rolls forward, tires finding the garage threshold.
The tires roll over the threshold. Sunlight floods the garage as the brothers push the car outside. Warm light wraps around them. The engine purrs — a steady, happy sound. They stop at the edge of the driveway. Bram looks at Pip. Pip looks at Bram. First drive.
