Friendship sparks brave adventures

Arrow and Hansel raced along a wooded Oklahoma path beneath spreading oaks. Dust puffed under their shoes, and cicadas buzzed in the noon heat. Suddenly, a bright red ribbon whipped from a branch and landed across Arrow’s face. She pulled it free, laughing at the ridiculous bow around her nose. “Hansel, look!”

The ribbon’s loose end slipped through the grass. Arrow and Hansel chased it beneath fluttering leaves, over a trickling stream, and around a mossy stone. Each time Arrow reached for the fluttering strip, it darted away with a soft swish. She narrowed her eyes at it. This ribbon was not ready to be caught.

At the fence, another red strip fluttered from a weathered post. Farther on, a third snagged beside the field. Arrow tied the pieces together with a length of twine, making a bright trail across the grass. Hansel held the knot while she stepped back. “Now we can follow it,” she said.

A gust roared across the pasture. The whole red line lifted, curled, and danced like a long, wiggly snake. Hansel’s round glasses flashed as he grabbed for the twine, but the wind pulled harder. Arrow pointed toward the woods. “Run!” The ribbon streamed ahead between the trees.

The ribbon zigzagged through the woods and caught on a low limb. Beneath it sat a small wooden box, half-hidden by ferns. Arrow brushed away the leaves and found faint carved lines across the lid. Hansel knelt beside her, whispering, “Do you think the ribbon led us here?”

Arrow climbed carefully, one hand on the rough limb and one foot searching for a steady place. She freed the ribbon with a gentle tug. It slid down beside the box, bright against the brown leaves. Hansel held the lid while Arrow lifted the latch. Inside lay a tiny red kite, folded neatly around a painted arrow.

They carried the kite to an open Oklahoma field where the grass rolled all the way to the horizon. Arrow tied the mysterious ribbon to its tail. Hansel held the spool high. Together they counted, “One, two, three!” The little kite sprang upward, its red tail snapping brightly in the wind.

The kite swooped low, then climbed in a bright red arc. Arrow sang a made-up song, and Hansel tugged the string whenever the kite dipped. They raced beneath it through waving grass, laughing as the ribbon danced overhead. At the far fence, the kite pointed toward another winding path.
