The house was old and creaky. Davi sat up in bed and listened.
One knock. Two knocks. Three knocks — exactly at eleven o'clock. Davi pulled the blanket up to his chin.
Davi slid out of bed and crept into the dark hallway. The floorboards creaked under his bare feet.
The house groaned around him. Davi took one step, then another, following the knocking sound.
Davi reached the end of the hall and crouched down. Something was wrong with the floor.
He tapped the board. It wiggled. The knocking came from right there, underneath.
Davi held his breath and pried the board open with his fingers.
A tiny music box sat inside. Davi lifted it out and wound the little key — tick, tick, tick.
A soft lullaby filled the hallway. Davi's eyes went wide. 'The knocking was the music box!'
The music box played on, sweet and steady. Davi set it down on the floor beside him.
Davi smiled a secret smile and curled up on the hallway floor. The music box played beside him.
The house was still creaky and still old. But now it sounded like a lullaby.
