Small things deserve big adventures

The cooling rack hummed with the last warmth of the oven. Two stubby legs stretched out from beneath the crust, pushed, and whooshed off the edge onto the tile. Plates clinked. The timer buzzed. The whole restaurant shook, and she just tilted her head toward the open door, where cool night air caught the edge of her crust.

The open door yawned wide, pulling cool night air across the tile floor. The cooling rack stood bare; plates ticked softly against one another, then fell still. The timer buzzed once, then stopped. The restaurant rocked, empty and gentle, like a ship that had just lost its one small passenger.

Between the wheels of a parked blue sedan, she sprinted. Leaped the curb. Vaulted the silver motorcycle's hood in two bouncy hops. The bakery neon washed her crust pink, and a thin golden thread of cheese trailed behind her like a ribbon in the wind.

A shadow slid across the wet asphalt, long and quick and wrong. Both little legs froze mid-step, toes curling into the dark paint of the road. The golden cheese ribbon snapped taut behind her, then went still. For one long held breath, the whole street held its stillness with her.

It peeled right off the brick wall—just a pigeon, grey and round, landing three inches away with a soft thump. It tilted its head and rasped softly against the rim of her crust. Oh, she thought, and bounced hard sideways. Back heel clipped the hood of the parked car. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The alarm shrieked. The pigeon shrieked right back, wings flapping wide, grey feathers scattering across the wet paint. She scrambled up the windshield wiper, one small foot gripping the rubber blade tight, and leaped the gap between two parked cars. She landed flat on the sidewalk, spinning once, twice, three times, before she could stop.

The city stretched in every direction—a grid of dark blocks, glowing windows, rivers of yellow streetlight. She was very, very small on the cold concrete. Then she looked up. Three windows down, a toy store burned butter-yellow, and on the top shelf inside, a round red cushion sat like a small soft bed, waiting.

She hopped through the open back door and bounced across the plush carpet, leaving two tiny damp prints. Stuffed bears and tiny wooden trucks held still in the warm light. The smell of basil and melted cheese drifted out through the front windows, and the whole store felt like somewhere she could stay forever. She tucked a slice of pepperoni beneath her cheek and closed her eyes.
