shy, gentle

loneliness and finding connection

Sérgio walked past the bright garden beds behind his house. At the far corner, a small flower bowed its head. Its petals curled brown at the edges. He sat on the damp soil and pressed his palm against the wilted stem.

The flower shivered. Then, with a soft push, a single fresh petal unfurled — pink and perfect. Sérgio's eyes went wide. He rushed to the next plant and cupped a drooping marigold in both hands.

He breathed slowly. Waited. The marigold lifted its orange face toward him. He ran to a patch of droopy mint and hummed a silly tune. The mint straightened with an almost comical snap. Sérgio grinned.

He pressed his ear to the warm dirt, listening. Somewhere underground, something hummed back — a quiet, green vibration he could feel in his teeth. He stayed like that for a long time.

The next day, Sérgio carried a small notebook to the garden. He drew a map of every plant he could reach, marking each with a dot. Then he tried the tall sunflower, stretching and stretching until his fingers brushed the lowest leaf.

The sunflower did not move. Sérgio's shoulders dropped. He sat back on his heels and noticed a thin green stem he had missed — a tiny clover, nearly invisible among the grass.

He knelt beside the clover and rested his forehead against its leaves. The clover trembled. Then it spread wide — and from its center, a small yellow flower bloomed, opening like a paper lantern.

Sérgio gasped, then laughed out loud. The sound carried down the street. He stayed there, watching the flower glow in the afternoon light.

The next morning, Sérgio walked to the garden with his notebook open to a fresh page. The clover was there, bright and steady, its yellow flower fully open.

He sat beside it and began to draw carefully. The flower leaned toward him as his pencil moved. Sérgio smiled without saying anything.

He turned the page. Blank. Waiting. He looked at the flower, then at the page, and began again.

The garden hummed around him — quietly, greenly, happily. Sérgio closed his eyes and listened.
