Mabel yanked open her sock drawer. Socks tumbled out like a colorful avalanche — stripes, polka dots, argyle — piling up on the bedroom floor. She stood frozen, staring at the heap of lonely socks with no partners.

She knelt and pulled out a red sock, hunting for its match. Blue. Green. Yellow. Every sock had a different idea of what pair meant. She lined them up by color, then by pattern — still nothing fit.

The door creaked. A small grey pigeon hopped onto her windowsill. It tilted its head and watched her through one bright orange eye, as if it understood the sock crisis perfectly.

Mabel spotted a striped sock with no partner. She picked it up and traced the ridges with her fingertip. A single tear splashed onto the carpet below.

Mabel grabbed a polka-dot sock and flung it at the bird. The pigeon caught it mid-air in its beak, dropped it on the sill, and tapped its talon against the glass — once, twice — as if counting her failures.

The pigeon tapped again. Once. Twice. Mabel huffed and snatched the nearest mismatched sock from the floor.

She slipped the sock over one of the pigeon's talons. The bird wobbled, let out a surprised 'coo', and stared down at its new footwear in absolute bewilderment.

Mabel burst out laughing — such a silly sock on such a silly bird. She laughed until her cheeks ached and the pigeon cooed back, rocking side to side on its one-socked foot.

Mabel dumped the rest of the sock drawer onto the bed. Every sock tumbled out — stripes, polka dots, solids, zigzags — a rainbow of mismatched pairs waiting to be reunited.

She arranged them side by side — red with blue, yellow with green, stripes with dots. No pair matched, but they looked better together than apart.

The pigeon hopped down from the windowsill and landed on the pillow beside her. It studied the sock rainbow with one bright eye, then settled in, tucking its feet beneath its feathers.

They sat together in a rainbow of wrong socks — the girl and the pigeon, both perfectly happy with their mismatched company.
