Milo stood in his bedroom and stared at the floor. A puddle of silver liquid shimmered between his slippers. It hadn't been there a minute ago. What is that? he wondered.

He knelt and dipped one finger into the silver. The world lurched. Walls stretched upward like taffy. The ceiling zoomed away. Milo shrank — smaller, smaller — until the floorboards became canyons and he tumbled into a warm, pulsing tunnel.

He floated down a river of deep crimson, carried by the current. Towering white sentinels lined the banks. They tipped imaginary hats as he passed. Milo waved back, his mouth forming a silent 'hello.' The sentinels bowed in return.

Milo drifted toward a bustling plaza. Tiny workers ferrying shimmering oxygen bubbles scurried around a grand drumbeat engine. One worker stumbled and a bubble slipped from his grip. It floated away with a soft sigh.

Milo caught the escaping bubble just before it drifted past. The worker blinked in surprise, then grinned and gave a thumbs-up. Milo held the bubble for a moment — it pulsed warm against his palm — then let it go.

Milo landed on a brass ledge beside the great engine. Repair crews worked a tiny leak, dabbing golden paste onto the seam. A crew member slipped — a dollop of golden paste landed right on Milo's shoe. A worker hurried over with a tiny wrench.

Together they scraped the golden paste free. Milo pocketed the tiny wrench. He stood a little taller. The engine's beat quickened, as if it liked him.

A siren wailed. A crack split the engine wall, and dark fluid began to seep. Milo's eyes widened. White sentinels rushed toward the leak, but there weren't enough. He gripped the golden wrench and leaped.

Milo pressed the wrench against the crack. The sentinels piled paste and patching material around it. Slowly, the leak sealed. The engine roared back to life — a mighty thrust — and Milo shot upward through a spiral of spinning light.

Milo tumbled back into his bedroom, landing softly on his rug. The silver puddle was just a puddle again — still, quiet, ordinary. He sat up slowly and looked at his hand.

He flexed his fingers slowly. Listen. A quiet hum vibrated through the floor — his heartbeat. A smile spread across his face. He hopped off the bed.

Milo ran to the backyard, ready to explore the incredible city within. He laughed and spun in circles, then dropped to his knees to press his ear to the warm grass. The hum was there — steady, strong, his own.
