Tico the little owl stood behind a desk tower of wobbly leaves. The forest office was noisy. Rabbit tapped his foot. Badger banged a stamp.

Tico gripped a blank leaf like a microphone. He opened his beak, but his voice came out as a tiny squeak that vanished under the rumble.

A tortoise slid a smooth stone across the desk. A fox folded a bright leaf into a crisp triangle and set it beside the stone.

Tico picked up the stone and tapped it — tap, tap, tap. Rabbit's foot stopped bouncing. Tico felt braver, but the leaves kept shaking when the wind sneezed through the pines.

Tico tried the leaf-triangle next. He called, "Follow the green shape!" Badger stomped toward it. Rabbit hopped toward it. They marched in a loose circle.

The triangle caught a breeze and spun away like a startled moth. Tico gasped and chased it with both wings. It fluttered over a muddy puddle and landed with a wet smack.

The paper landed flat with a wet smack. Tico stared at the ruined shape and wished the forest floor would swallow him whole.

Three tangled problems waited: a beaver had no rope, acorns were rolling downhill, and frogs argued at the bridge. Tico breathed in through his nose and counted to five.

Tico whispered, "Stone, leaf, breathe," and marched to the frogs. But their quarrel swelled louder than his words, and his wings drooped until the moss felt cool and solid.

Tico stopped shouting. He walked to the edge of the bridge where the river hummed, placed the stone on a flat rock, and let it ring — clink. The frogs fell silent.

The frogs' webbed feet went still. Tico pointed the leaf-triangle like a tiny flag to mark the line. He linked the rope to a low branch so the acorns slid safely into a basket.

The office hum changed from chaotic chirps to a happy buzz. Tico smiled and tapped the stone again — clink, clink. The forest now knew how to listen.
