Timmy pushed through the mechanic's shop door, his small fingers wrapping around a handle still marked with the worn prints of someone much taller. Shiny tools hung from every pegboard, and half-finished engines sat on benches like sleeping giants.

He spotted the old tow truck with its hood thrown wide and set his dented toolbox down with a soft thud. His eyes caught a loose bolt near his foot — when he picked it up, the metal was warm against his palm. He thought: someone was working here just recently.

Timmy lined up three stubborn bolts on the workbench and attacked them with a tiny screwdriver, his tongue poking out in concentration. The first bolt spun wildly and panged against the wall; the second caught with a gritty grind.

The third bolt wouldn't budge until it finally gave with a sharp click, sending all three rolling toward the edge of the bench. They vanished into the shadows beneath the tow truck, and Timmy stared at the empty space where they disappeared.

Timmy squeezed onto his belly and crawled beneath the tow truck, his cheek pressed to the cool concrete as he peered into the dark machinery. His fingers found the bolts — cold, greasy, perfect — and he slid them back into place one by one.

Just as he reached for the final bolt, it tumbled from his grip and rolled away — but then the engine shuddered and groaned, and the missing bolt began to slide back toward him on its own. Timmy caught it mid-roll and snapped it home.

The entire truck leaped forward with a burst of steam that smelled like cinnamon and hot metal. The engine purred a deep contented note that vibrated through the floorboards, and Timmy sat back on his heels, soot smudged across his forehead.

The headlights swept across the shop in slow steady arcs. The shop owner appeared in the doorway, holding out a brand-new wrench — bigger than Timmy's hands, its handle smooth and silver in the morning light. Timmy took it, and the metal fit his palm perfectly. Behind him, the tow truck honked once, loud and proud.
