Tobi crouched in the sandbox and scooped up a shiny blue spinning top. It hummed like a tiny motor and wobbled on its point.
Another child reached for it. Tobi pulled the top behind his back. "Mine," he said.
Tobi marched home and tried the top on his bedroom floor. It wobbled, tipped, and fell flat. Every time.
He tried again. Same result. Outside the window, a girl stood by the fence, watching him.
Tobi walked to the window. The girl held a red ball and looked at the ground. His top was still not spinning.
He picked up the top and walked to the front door. The girl was still there, staring at her red ball.
Tobi held the blue top out to the girl. Her eyes went wide. They sat on the sidewalk and took turns.
The top hummed and danced between them. The girl laughed out loud.
