Toby stepped into the sunlit clearing and tripped over a scattered pile of number tiles. He gasped and dropped to his knees, gathering the rainbow-colored tiles from the grass. The numbers were supposed to be in order — but today, they were all mixed up.
Toby lined up the tiles from 1 to 5 on the mossy stump, but they slid sideways and rearranged themselves before he could press them flat. He frowned and tried again, pushing each tile firmly with his paw. The tiles refused to stay, giggling and shifting with every tap.
Toby called out to his forest friends, and soon the rabbit, the squirrel, and the fox appeared from behind the trees. Each one carried a different pattern puzzle from their home. Toby studied each one carefully, tracing the patterns with his claw, trying to find the rule that held them together.
The rabbit's puzzle had alternating colors. The squirrel's had repeating shapes. The fox's had a tricky number sequence that went backward. Toby traced each pattern slowly, his eyes wide with concentration, listening to the quiet rustle of the forest around him.
Toby spread a red-and-white checkered picnic blanket across the grass and began placing tiles into each puzzle's spots. One for the rabbit. Two for the squirrel. Three for the fox. The numbers on the ground started to rattle and then lift, shimmering in the warm light.
The mixed-up numbers began to rattle on the ground, then lifted into the air. They swirled around Toby in a shimmering cloud of digits, spinning and dancing like fireflies made of light.
The numbers spiraled around Toby in a dazzling dance, brighter and brighter, until — with a soft popping sound — they settled perfectly into place, one by one.
All the tiles now stood in perfect order — one, two, three, four, five, six, seven — arranged across the blanket like a rainbow staircase. Toby sat back on his haunches and let out a happy little hum.
His friends gathered close, pointing at the patterns and smiling. The rabbit tapped the alternating colors. The squirrel counted the repeating shapes. The fox traced the backward numbers with his claw.
Toby tapped a single tile with his paw and it chimed like a bell — clear and bright, ringing through the quiet clearing. Every number hummed in response, and the forest seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
Everything was in its right place. The tiles, the patterns, the friends. Toby looked around at the golden clearing and felt his heart swell with quiet joy.
The numbers glowed gently in the afternoon light, and Toby knew — no matter how mixed up things got, he always had his friends to help put them right.
