Milo and Nina crouched by the park bench, peering into a cracked plastic container. Inside, a small turtle lay motionless on damp newspaper. Milo frowned at the dirty water and crumpled paper, then looked at Nina with a determined expression.

Milo dragged the container across the sidewalk to his backyard, its wheels catching on a crack in the concrete. Nina followed with a small bowl of smooth stones. Milo filled the tub with warm water from the garden hose while Nina arranged the rocks in a neat row.

Each morning Milo left chopped vegetables near the hiding spot. Each morning, the turtle refused them. On the fourth morning, Milo noticed a single green leaf floating near the surface. It had been watching — and waiting — for something else to grow.

That afternoon, Milo placed a sprig of water lettuce on the surface and stepped back. Nina held her breath. The turtle surfaced, stretched its neck, and took a careful bite. Milo grinned so wide his cheeks hurt. "It's eating!" Nina whispered. The turtle dipped its head again, chewing slowly in the warm sun.

One morning Milo ran to the container and stopped. The lid was pushed aside, the water was still, and the turtle was gone. Mud tracks led across the grass to the backyard fence, stopping just below the latch. Milo and Nina followed the footprints together to the edge of the quiet pond.

At the pond's edge, Milo and Nina crouched down. The water was dark and still, covered with lily pads and reeds. Then a familiar green shape broke the surface — slow, steady, confident. The turtle glided toward the reeds without looking back.

The turtle disappeared beneath the reeds, leaving only ripples. Milo sat back on his heels and watched the water settle. Nina sat beside him, their shoulders touching. The pond was quiet again, but Milo felt something warm and bright in his chest.

Milo smiled at the pond, at Nina, and at the space where the turtle had been. He would come back tomorrow. He would bring the water lettuce. And he would wait, because sometimes the best thing you can do is let something find its way home.
