Uno stood on the chalkboard ledge and watched the other numbers bounce across the wooden floor. Their rubber soles clacked a cheerful rhythm. A piece of yellow chalk rolled to a stop near his foot.
Two, Five, and Eight bounced past without looking up. Uno picked up the chalk and turned it over in his small hands. It felt cool and smooth. The chalkboard ledge seemed very far away from their game.
Uno hopped down from the ledge and walked toward Two and Three playing tag. Every time he reached out, they darted away, leaving only chalk dust on his fingertips. He whispered, 'Can I play?' but they did not hear.
Two and Three built a tall tower from counting blocks. Uno climbed up to rest on top. They pushed it down and marched him away. 'You don't fit,' they said. His block slid off with a hollow clack.
Uno walked back to the chalkboard ledge, holding his block close. He set it down and sat beside it. The classroom noise grew louder. Four argued with Seven. Six spun in circles. Nine got stuck in the pencil cup.
The teacher's voice cracked through the noise: 'Everyone, line up for counting!' The numbers froze, looking at each other in panic. No one knew where to begin. The pencil cup tipped over with a soft clatter.
Uno climbed onto the teacher's desk. He stood at the very front and called out, 'Start with me!' Two and Three looked at him, then at each other. Their bodies leaned forward, curious and uncertain.
The numbers lined up — One, Two, Three, Four, Five — in a joyful, wobbling line that stretched across the floor. They counted together, their voices overlapping. Uno felt the rhythm of their counting through his feet.
When Uno looked back at the chalkboard ledge, the yellow chalk piece was waiting for him, perfectly centered among the number drawings. It glowed in the sunlight. He had started the line. He had found his place.
Below him, the numbers bounced and clacked across the wooden floor tiles. Their rhythm was louder now, happier. Uno picked up the yellow chalk and drew a circle around himself on the ledge. It fit perfectly.
