In the cozy barracks, Vaddi banged the drum in the boom-boom room. BOOM! A spoon jumped from a shelf, and every nearby door rattled.
Vaddi grinned and struck again. BOOM! The spoon leaped higher, and the doors shook harder.
Then came clapping, stomping, and a kazoo. The walls trembled, the windows buzzed, and Vaddi thought, “Perhaps this is loud enough.”
Vaddi lowered the drum and covered the kazoo. HONK! One last silly sound bounced around the room.
Vaddi opened the door and listened. The hallway answered with quiet footsteps and sleepy groans, so Vaddi carried the drum outside.
A gust caught the drum and rolled it downhill. Vaddi raced after it, past the barracks and toward the open yard.
At the yard, Vaddi caught the runaway drum. Vaddi tapped one small beat and waited.
Neighbors peeked from the barracks. Vaddi offered the drum, and the nearest neighbor answered with two careful claps.
One clap became many. Stomps joined in, then cheers, until the whole yard bounced with a brand-new beat.
Vaddi led the celebration beneath the bright sky. Drums boomed, feet stomped, and everyone danced together while the cozy barracks stayed peaceful.
When the dancing slowed, Vaddi lifted the kazoo. HONK! It was tiny, silly, and exactly right.
The yard answered with one last cheer. From inside the barracks came only soft, sleepy silence.
