Moxie pulled the quilt up to the chin. Suddenly, the teddy bear sat straight up. “Hello,” said the bear.
The book fell with a plop. Moxie stared at the teddy bear in the lamplight.
Scratch-scratch came from the closet. Moxie pointed, and the teddy bear picked up a tiny flashlight.
Together they tiptoed closer. The closet door gave a squeaky jiggle.
Clack, clack, clack! Moxie opened the closet a crack. Pajamas, shoes, and a hat tumbled out.
The flashlight shone under the bed. A slipper gave a silly wave. Moxie blinked.
The clacking came again. Moxie and the teddy bear hurried to the window.
Clack, clack, clack! “I was scared,” Moxie told the bear. The bear squeezed Moxie’s hand.
The noise sounded smaller. Moxie tied the shutter shut with a red ribbon.
Moxie climbed back into bed with the teddy bear. “Hello, quiet,” Moxie whispered.
