The library was very quiet except for the pop and sigh of oak logs in the stone fireplace. Willa wandered between the towering shelves, her fingers brushing along the leather spines of sleeping books.
A folded yellowed paper slipped from between two heavy volumes and fluttered to her feet. She picked it up and unfolded it — a faded ink map, marked with a tiny red X deep in the dustiest corner.
Willa crept between the shelves, following the map's crooked lines past rows of slumbering books. The tick-tock of the grandfather clock faded behind her, and only the soft crunch of dust marked her path.
The air grew cooler with every step. Willa paused where the firelight ended and the shelves vanished into deep blue shadow. She pressed the map closer to her face and read the crooked lines again.
At the far end of the library, she found a wooden door with no handle and no keyhole. It sat flush against the stone wall like it had grown there, silent and waiting.
She pushed. She pulled. She leaned her whole weight against the wood until her palms stung. The door did not move. Not even a whisper of a creak.
Willa slid the map against the wood — nothing. Then she noticed a thin line of shadow beneath the door, as if something wider and darker waited just below the threshold.
Willa dropped to her knees and ran her fingers along the floorboards. One board near the door edge felt loose. She dug her fingernails underneath and pulled.
It gave way with a sharp crack. Inside the hollow slot rested a small brass key, warm from some forgotten heat. Willa closed her fingers around it and stood up.
Willa turned to the door and held the brass key up to the wood. For the first time, she saw it — a narrow hidden lock, almost invisible, carved into the grain near the center.
The key slid into the hidden lock with a satisfying click. The door swung inward, revealing a tiny chamber filled with glowing maps on every surface.
Willa stepped inside. The warmth of the room wrapped around her like a secret the library had been keeping all along. She reached out and touched the nearest glowing map.
