Willo drifted past the window and out into the moonlit village. A tiny yellow light blinked on, off, on — a firefly landed near Willo's shoulder. Willo peeked back at the house, then drifted a little farther.
The firefly buzzed forward and darted back, as if to say follow. Willo followed — past the sleeping bakery, past the fountain with its quiet plop — watching the firefly's blinking trail lead deeper into the village.
A wide wooden bridge blocked the path, and the firefly zipped across and back three times. Willo tried once, too shy. Tried twice, still shy.
On the third try, Willo floated across and the firefly cheered with a bright flash.
The glowing trail suddenly disappeared, and the village went dark. Willo stopped drifting. The firefly hovered close and gently tapped Willo's hand, then darted toward a warm yellow light glowing in a window.
Willo followed the firefly toward the window and saw a family of ghosts waving from inside.
Willo drifted through the open window, and the firefly landed on the windowsill, blinking its happy yellow light.
Willo looked around at the waving ghosts, and a new thought sparkled. Maybe this was the place to stay.
The firefly blinked its little yellow light, and Willo blinked back.
One of the ghost family drifted closer and reached out a gentle hand. Willo reached back.
Willo drifted further into the room, and the waving ghosts closed in around.
Willo floated gently among the ghosts, and the firefly's warm light glowed on the windowsill all night long.
