Winston pressed his wrinkled nose against the cool glass. He watched his family laugh and chat while he sat alone on the rug.
He puffed out his cheeks and let out a soft, squeaky 'hrrrm'. The sound vibrated in his throat, but it did not break the warm chatter around him.
Winston practiced by barking at the toaster until it popped up with a cheerful ding. He tried again, producing a loud woof that startled a fly buzzing near the sugar bowl.
His ears perked up, hoping for a reply, but the family only turned the page of the newspaper. He attempted to mimic the baby's coos instead.
He made high-pitched noises that echoed off the tiled floor. A spoon clattered from the table as Dad dropped it, looking down with wide eyes at the strange noise.
Winston took a deep breath, squinted his big eyes shut, and pushed all his air out in one clear, strong shout: 'HELLO!'
The word hung in the air, crisp and undeniable, silencing the room instantly. Dad’s fork froze mid-air, and Mom’s smile widened into a gasp of pure delight.
The family rushed over, wrapping Winston in a group hug that smelled like warm bread and hugs. They repeated the word back to him, laughing and cheering.
Winston rested his chin on Dad’s knee, feeling perfectly part of the noisy, loving circle. He closed his eyes, happy to finally be heard.
The kitchen filled with laughter once more, but this time, the sounds were shared. Winston purred softly, knowing he belonged.
