In a sunny meadow, tall grass waved beside a little wooden fence.
Wren and her friend tugged the silver bell back and forth over the fence. "Mine!" Wren pulled too hard.
The bell went CLANG! and flew into the tall grass between them.
Wren hopped away from the fence and chased a butterfly. It landed on the silver bell and wouldn't leave.
She glanced at the empty spot where her friend usually sat. The tall grass waved softly in the breeze.
Wren found a clover stem and chewed it, but it tasted bitter. She spat it out.
She hopped to the fence and pressed her ear against the warm planks. Only the wind whispered through the grass.
Wren took a deep breath, grabbed the silver bell in her teeth, and climbed over the fence.
Her friend looked up as Wren dropped the bell between them and said, "I'm sorry." The friend's ears perked up. Wren reached out a paw.
Her friend took Wren's paw. They rang the bell together — Clang! — and hopped through the tall grass, side by side.
