Yimu dashes through the doorway of her cozy panda home. Paper daisies sway from the rafters above, and baskets of blank eggs line every surface. "I want to make this Easter the best and most memorable!" she announces, standing on her tiptoes to reach the center of the table.
Her uncle smiles, his round belly trembling with laughter, and opens a small lacquered box on the shelf. Inside rests one egg painted the brightest, most impossible yellow. "This one is for you," he says. Yimu takes it with both paws, as if it were made of sunlight.
Yimu dips her brush into the yellow pot and immediately knocks it over. Bright paint splashes across the table and runs straight toward the egg in her paws. She gasps, holding it up as the yellow swirls into wild, messy streaks that look nothing like Easter at all.
Instead of setting the egg down, Yimu grabs a handful of soft green moss from the craft basket and presses it onto the wet paint. She sticks pinecone buttons and a single dried flower along the side. "It's a garden egg!" she declares, and her uncle's eyes widen with genuine surprise.
Yimu places her mossy garden egg on the centerpiece plate and steps back to examine every detail. The green threads curl around the yellow streaks, and the tiny flower peeks out near the top. It's messy. It's wild. It's hers.
Her uncle shakes his head slowly, a grin spreading across his face. He reaches behind him to pull out three small lacquered boxes lined up on the windowsill. "I've been hiding these all week," he whispers, opening each one to reveal shimmery silver, deep ocean blue, and warm golden paint.
Yimu stares at the new colors, her paw hovering over them. Then she looks at her garden egg and back at the empty space on the table. She picks up a fresh blank egg and dips her brush into the silver paint. The bristles tinkle like tiny bells.
The table gleams with eggs of every color and texture. Yimu sits cross-legged beside her uncle as he hands her the final empty egg from his pocket. "The best Easter ever," he murmurs. Yimu nods, already touching her brush to the smooth white shell.
