The radio ticked. His badge caught the sunlight. The cop van sat still on the street.
BANG! The door swung open. A fat cat tumbled in, paws flailing, papers everywhere. The coffee mug tipped. Splat. 'What?'
'Stop, cat!' he stomped. The fat cat plopped onto the seat, one paw stretched up into the sun. He scrubbed at his sleeve. The orange fuzz would not come off.
'Out, cat!' He shook the van. The fat cat waddled across the dashboard. Its round shadow dropped over his face. He pressed his forehead to the cool glass. One tiny paw patted the horn button.
The cat's heavy belly settled on the horn. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! The windows rattled. Three houses down, a neighbor poked her head out. His mouth opened. Snapped shut. His shoulders shook.
He slapped his knee. 'Ha! Ha! Ha!' He doubled over. The fat cat purred, tail flicking against the steering wheel. The horn droned on. Sunlight flooded the van. Across the street, someone honked back.
The cat shifted its weight. The horn stopped. Silence. The fat cat curled up on the seat, belly rising, belly falling. He straightened his tie.
The radio ticked again. The fat cat stretched one paw into the sunbeam. He pressed his nose to the glass. The street went back to normal. Sort of.
