Zippy thumped a bare foot on the dry pavement. The village pump hissed and spat dust. Behind Zippy, thirsty animals tapped their paws. The pump gave one last wheezing groan, and Zippy raced toward the old workshop.
Dusty shelves shivered as Zippy searched the workshop. Beneath a beam of sunlight, Zippy found a blue book titled First Code for Fixers. The pump remained silent outside. Zippy opened the book and found a matching pump diagram with arrows pointing to three buttons.
Zippy pressed the three buttons in order. Pop! Pop! Pop! The pump belched lavender-scented bubbles. They floated over the square and burst on every waiting animal’s head.
Zippy scrubbed bubble scent from their whiskers and entered a second code: red, red, green. The pump trumpeted. One shining arc of water landed neatly in a bucket, then stopped. Zippy tried a third code, and the pump spun backward, clattering empty cans across the pavement.
Frustrated, Zippy dropped the book. It landed open among the cans. A scribbled note filled the page: “The pump isn’t broken—it’s confused.” Zippy traced the words slowly with one paw.
Behind the pump’s loose panel, Zippy spotted a fourth button. Red, green, red—then tap-tap on the hidden button. The machine purred. Water surged forward, wide and gleaming, soaking the pavement and splashing both of Zippy’s ears.
Zippy turned the handle wider. Water rushed into a row of troughs for the waiting animals. The pump hummed a steady musical note. Zippy tapped new codes for the garden and bathhouse while the village square began to glisten.
At last, Zippy tapped one final button. The pump sang on. Zippy rested both paws against its warm metal and listened to the happy sound of flowing water.
