Snap! Max slips on his red sneakers. He yanks the little book off the hook and dashes out.

The sun beats down on the brick wall. Max runs: "The movies! I'm coming!" He waves the little book.

The little book cracks open. The pages fly: swish, swish, swish. Like white birds over the ground.

Max crouches low. He snags a page under the wall. The others swirl toward the cobblestones.

Page after page, he tucks them back in. One sticks to the cobblestone. He pries it loose: it's all crumpled.

The last page rides the wind. It soars toward the movie theater door. Snap, snap, snap.

Max jogs along. The little page leads the way, like a tiny white puppy. He's almost got it.

The wooden door, half open. The projector light flickers inside. Max shoves every page back in a flash.

He swings the door wide open. CLICK. Golden light paints stripes all over the street.

Max flips the little red OPEN sign. He sets the book on the small table. He sits behind the little window.

Outside, the streetlamp at the corner flicks on. Click. The whole street shifts its shade.

Max taps his pencil on the desk. Tap, tap, tap. Ready.
