Under the great oak, one last acorn waited in the leaves.
"I see it!" "I see it too!" The squirrel siblings sprang from opposite branches.
Bump! Their paws knocked together. The acorn wobbled. Both grabbed it at once.
One tugged left. One tugged right. Slip, slide, plop!
They sat up and scowled. Little leaf bits clung to their tails. The acorn gleamed between them.
Then each squirrel had a new idea.
One squirrel whisked the acorn behind a mushroom. But boing! The cap tipped up and popped it into the air.
"Wait! Wait!" they chattered as the acorn bounced off a root and tapped a stone.
The acorn rolled straight toward the muddy puddle.
They dove together and caught it just in time.
They froze, nose to nose. A yellow leaf spun down between them. The grove went quiet.
Then one cracked the acorn open, and the other held out both paws.
They sat side by side on the great oak root and took two crunchy turns.
They grinned with crumbs on their whiskers as a soft shower of leaves fluttered down.
Thunk! Another acorn landed nearby.
They laughed and reached for it together.
