New beginnings and friendship

Zumeira clings to the doorknob of the classroom. Her mother waves to her from the hallway, and then the door closes quietly. Zumeira whispers, "I don't want to stay alone." She looks at the wall filled with shiny drawings while soft laughter comes from inside.

The teacher approached Zumeira and knelt beside her. She pointed to a table with large sheets of paper and open boxes of colors. Zumeira's fingers lingered on the door for a moment, then she looked at the shiny crayons and took a small step forward.

Zumeira walked to the table and grabbed a blue crayon. Suddenly, "Crack!" the crayon broke in half in her hand. Zumeira's eyes widened, and she fell silent. The teacher laughed and said, "Now you have two colors instead of one." Zumeira placed one half on the paper and kept the other half in her hand.

Zumeira sat in front of the paper and drew a long line. Two children approached; one placed a box of colors between them, and the other pushed a yellow crayon towards her. Zumeira slowly lifted her head. She heard the rustling of papers around her, then drew a small sun when one of the children said, "Shall we draw together?"

Zumeira moved the yellow crayon quickly. The lines slipped from her, and the sun turned into funny long hair! The children laughed, and the teacher laughed too. Zumeira laughed with them for the first time, then drew two round eyes and said, "Now it’s a sun with hair!" The chairs moved closer around the table.

Zumeira returned home after kindergarten, waving her paper high. She placed it on the table next to her glass of milk and smiled. She said, "Tomorrow I will finish the sun with hair." Then she looked at the drawing smeared with yellow and blue as if it had become a door she recognized.
