Pttth! A shiny black seed landed in her palm. She dug a deep hole in the sun-baked garden soil. The dirt felt warm and dusty.
She patted the mud flat. Cool, wet earth squished right between her bare toes! She grabbed her green watering can to finish the job.
On Monday, she poured water over the spot. Splish, splash! But the ground stayed empty and dry. "Come on, little seed," she whispered.
By Wednesday, a tiny, bright green sprout poked up! She clapped her muddy hands together and skipped in a happy circle.
Weeks passed, and the garden grew wild. Long, curly vines stretched across the sunny yard. They hid something huge beneath the broad green leaves.
She brushed the leaves away to find a striped watermelon, as big as a beach ball! She thumped the hard rind with her knuckles. Thunk, thunk.
Her mouth dropped open in a huge "O." She tried to lift the fruit, but it was entirely too heavy for just one person.
"Help me push!" she called to her friends. Together, they rolled the giant melon across the crunchy grass.
Suddenly, the melon bumped over a sharp rock. CRACK! A sweet, sticky smell filled the air as the fruit split perfectly into bright red halves.
Everyone sat on a checkered blanket, taking huge bites. Cool pink juice ran down their chins. She slipped one black seed into her pocket.
